Have you ever experienced a restless rest? Let’s say you are in a very exhaustive condition and long for a good and sound sleep but your rest turn restless by dreams, restless minds or perhaps phone calls etc. Disturbance and distraction may cause restlessness in our lives. We may plan a family holiday abroad in order to have rest and time for fun and joy however it may turn out to be a restless time for everyone. You may be rushed by the tour’s time schedule or offended by tourist mate on the bus or perhaps feeling sad of purchasing an overly expensive item.
Our lives have become more like a “fire station” being ready in response to any emergency, urgency and inquiries. We are constantly prompted to respond to messages, posts and comments in our digital gadgets. Failure to respond is equal to disconnectivity. A prompt response is regarded as compulsory. Well, I don't mean that we have to disconnect ourselves in order to find rest. My vocation requires 24-hour readiness in service. Fire station life has become my way of living. It takes tranquility of the heart to find peace in a fire-station lifestyle. I am using a smart phone to stay connected. Emails, Facebook and Blackberry messenger is my fire engines while smart phone, notebook computer or tablet are my fire fire-fighter equipments. Digital age is gradually changing our lifestyle and creating a new digital culture as part of our lives.
Many unexpected occurrences may challenge us to often change our plan. Honestly, we all hate changes. Changes, disruptions and interruption are indeed very disturbing. With a new attitude and perspective we can model an unexpected interruption into an exploration of a new aspect of life. For our Lord says, "My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest" (Exodus 33:14). Our Lord is our infinite source of energy that we can draw from. Hence, the apostle Paul wrote on the paramount of being in Him like a branch being joined to a tree (John 15.6). If not, we will become dry, being cut off and thrown into the burning fire. Being connected to the world but disconnect from the Lord will eventually dry our lives. To live meaningfully is very crucial to our well-being. The fruition of life is available when our lives are connected to Him. We are called and sent to the world meaning we have to stay connected to the world. Our lives must be connected to our Lord to be meaningful otherwise we will be restless. Are you restless? Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for you souls.” (Matthew 11.28-29). Rest for our souls is just what we need. Trust our lives and future to Him who holds the key to salvation. May His presence is with us and we will have rest!
